What Is Being Born Again?

Being Born Again John 3: 1-8

Where Did Born Again Come From? What Is Being Born Again? How Do You Get Born Again? (All Scripture from the King James Bible)

1. Where Did Born Again Come From?

Gospel of John says in Chapter 3 verse 3, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

So the term born again is a Bible term. God himself said we need to be born again.

2. What Is Being Born Again?

A Jewish priest named Nicodemus asked Jesus this question. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

Jesus answered that question like this

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Jesus explains being born again as an event that happens to someone, after they are physically born of their mother, that involves water (notice he did not say baptism) and the Spirit, that is the Holy Spirit. So one must ask then, if the water is not baptism, what is the water? The Apostle Paul explained the water in Ephesians 5:26 when he said, “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word” so the water is the word of God, the scriptures. The word of God is called the water, it is also called the seed in the parable of the sower. Why or how can the scriptures play a roll?

Paul explains that question in Ephesians and Romans when he said in Ephesians 2 verses 7 – 10. “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

And in Romans chapter 10 verse 17 Paul said, : “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”

So the water or word of God gives us faith and when we have enough faith to believe in our heart what the scriptures say and the Holy Spirit teaches us and helps us understand, we are ready to be born again as Jesus said.

3. How Do You Get Born Again?

Jesus explained the born again concept to the religious crowd in parables but to his disciples, he spoke clearly. One example is when Jesus spoke the parable of The Sower in Luke. We will use one example from the gospel of Luke chapter 8 starting in verse 9:

And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?

10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Another example is in 1 Peter 1:23 where Peter tells us how people are born again, “23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

This parable and verse in 1 Peter have some key words, what we would call subject words because they identify the subject matter in the parable. This parable’s key words or subject words are:

  1. God
  2. Word of God
  3. Born Again
  4. Devil
  5. Ears and heart

Notice you do not see keeping the Ten Commandments, you do not see by going to church, you do not see by being baptized. Notice you do not see by being good and doing good works. We see from our key words that being born again includes our ears and our heart. We notice the Devil has something to do with our being born again and we notice that the word of God and God himself have something to do with being born again. So let us look at these five things closely.

1 Peter 1:23 – Being born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.

And when the seed (the word of God – Luke 8:11) is sown into your ears and into your heart, one of four things will happen:

  1. Way Side – You hear and your adversary the devil will steal it so you do not believe and get saved (Luke 8:12).
  2. On The Rock – You hear and receive the word but when you are tempted by the devil, you fall away because you never grew in knowledge of the Lord (the seed did not take root) (Luke 8:13).
  3. Among Thorns – You hear and go your way worrying more about things in your life, cares of the world, making money and getting jobs and enjoying what you want in life and you bring no fruit (Luke 8:14).
  4. The Good Ground – You hear and in your heart you keep the word (not works) and you bring forth fruit (Luke 8:15).

Now ask yourself, when you heard the word of God, seed planted in you, what kind of ground did that seed land on?

Notice the seed that landed on good ground? Notice how you hear the word of God and it goes into your heart. That seed or word going into your heart when you believe is what we call faith. You hear God’s word, you believe God’s word and then you act on God’s word and that is how you are born again. Nowhere in the Bible, the Scripture, does it say to be born again, say this prayer, no where. You see you hear God’s word (usually from a preacher, missionary, evangelist) and you believe God’s word and it settles into your heart. Now you need to act on what God has shown you and how do you do that? Let’s see what the Apostle Paul says.

Romans chapter 10 verse 8 is where we will start.

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

So reading what God himself says you have to do to be saved, born again, what do you notice are some key words? We give you a clue by the words underlined and in bold type. Notice it is not just confessing with your mouth but you have to believe in your heart that God did in fact raise Jesus Christ from the dead. If you do not believe God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and you say some prayer, according to God’s word, you are not saved. Do you believe God or man? Do you want to get saved? Born again? Do you believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross and shed his blood to pay for your sin? Do you believe he was buried and rose from the dead? Do you believe that with all your heart? Then tell God. You could say something like – God Almighty, I believe that Jesus Christ came and shed his blood on the cross to pay for my sin. I believe with all my heart that he was raised from the dead and I now ask you to save my soul. I confess this prayer out loud to you God. I believe please save me.

Saying that prayer and not really meaning it or saying that prayer just to say a prayer to get you to heaven will not get you to heaven. We have learned from God’s word, it is the word of God the seed and that seed is planted in your heart and if your heart is good ground, you believe with all your heart, and then you confess with your mouth, out loud, then God promises to save you and you are born again. Please tell someone about your decision because you want to continue to confess out loud your decision.
