What is the veil between the spiritual realm and our earthly walk on earth? Paul makes it clear, we are in a spiritual battle and it is warfare. The veil between the spiritual world and the earthly, is the body – the flesh.
Things in this world, the natural world, appeal to the flesh. People spend wads of money on things in this natural world. They buy houses, cars, technology, food, clothing, cosmetics, perfumes, sports gear, sporting goods all to improve their natural world, enhance their flesh. They feed their flesh and the desires of their flesh.
The soul/mind has thoughts (see Dirty Thoughts ) and starts to desire things from this natural world. Things that appeal to the flesh. Once you start to desire these things, you start to reason the thoughts and figure out a way you can obtain these desires. Once you determine you are going to go after these things, the thought gets into your heart. What’s in your heart comes out your mouth (we will cover this one later). You will do what you have to -to obtain your prize.
Sometimes, people take destructive paths to obtain prizes. Many do not realize, once they take that destructive path, the joy, excitement and pleasure of that prize wears off. And then what do they have? Guilt, shame and regrets.
The key is how do you handle the guilt, shame and regrets. Do you do like King David and confess, repent and admit to God you sinned and ask God to forgive and help you? Or, do you wallow in pity, shame and guilt?
Satan knows if he can get a hold of your thoughts and your mind, even if only for a moment. He and his evil workers spread lies into your head and keep pushing and pushing the lies until you finally believe the lies. And then he has you in his TRAP. He has then made a stronghold in your mind/soul (see 2 Corinthians 10:3-5) and if he gets that stronghold that means he successfully tricked you.
We all know the lies that Satan spews and his tricks. He never wispers good thoughts or he mixes truth with lies like he did to Jesus in Matthew 4. Satan tells us we are worthless, life isn’t worth living, you’ll never amount to anything, do it just once you will see it won’t hurt you, that Christian does it, and on and on.
And if Satan can’t get to you and your thoughts, he will use other people to convince you, even friends or worse, family. They will tell you maybe you should do this or that. Don’t get upset with them, they don’t know Satan is using them. Teach them. That is why good preachers say to seek advice from God and godly people who you know have a true relationship with the Lord.
The only way you break strongholds is with faith and God’s word. You have to out loud cast that thought down as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”
How do you do that? Say out loud, I rebuke that thought and reject it. Then you need to quote out loud a scripture verse. Even if you only know one verse, quote it out loud, it builds faith (Romans 10:17).
Example: You get a thought to check your Facebook page, at work. Or you want to try a grape from the produce section at the supermarket. You can say out loud, I rebuke and reject that thought. Thou shalt not steal. If anyone asks you what you are doing, great opportunity to witness for Jesus.
We fight something we can not see (a spiritual battle) and we fight with weapons we can not see – the shield of faith and the word of God ( see Hebrews 11:1 & Ephesians 6:17).
There is a spirit that works in the natural man and that spirit is from Satan – Ephesians 2:1-5 – but Praise God because God is rich in mercy, for his great love will save us and help us if we ask.
Until next time – God loves you and wants you to turn your heart and life over to him.
Recently, a lot of attention has been given to mental illness. Question: Is mental illness a disease of brain matter or is it thought (s) related?
Thoughts come into into your head/mind (Daniel 2:29) affecting the soul (mind, will and emotions). These thoughts you reason out. Once you decide what to do with the thought, the thought gets into your heart (affecting your spirit) and what is in your heart comes out of your mouth (lips, tongue, your speech), see Job 20:2. Remember when Jesus said, Matthew 12:34-37
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Question: The thoughts that get into your head, your mind/soul, how do they get there and where do they come from?
Have you ever been praying and had a terrible, ungodly thought? We all have. Did you ever ask, where did that thought come from? Just ask yourself, where did the thought come from that got into Eve’s head? Who planted the thought in Adam and Eve’s head?
Remember, Satan planted a seed thought in Eve’s mind/soul. (See our post Why Satan’s Tricks Work Today ). The seed thought was reasoned out by Eve, she acted on the thought expecting the result to be they will be as gods. What was the result? Shame (Gen.2:7) they knew they were naked. Fear (Gen. 2:10) So what did Satan’s seed thought produce? Shame, fear and spiritual death. Is that what Satan told Eve would happen? No. He told her they would be as gods. So Satan lied to her. And he does the same thing today, he lies to you, he tricks you, he deceives you.
Thoughts come from God, from family, friends, people and Satan. These thoughts are seeds planted in your mind/your soul. See the parable of the sower in Luke 8:11-15.
“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
They on the rock are they , which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Whether the seed thought is good or evil, when you start to reason out the thought and what the result would be, the thought gets into your heart. Once the thought is in your heart, you will act on the thought.
The key is when you get a thought, determine if it is a good thought or evil thought. If you don’t know, ask yourself, does this thought offend God, go against God’s word, help my spirit, soul or body. That is why Paul calls it, warfare. We battle thoughts.
Until next time.
Never quit on God
Remember last time we discussed – Our soul/mind has thoughts, desires, imagination, conscience (knowing right from wrong), memory, reasoning and affections. I used examples of good thoughts and bad thoughts ( see Your Soul Is The Prize ). Now we will look at Adam & Eve.
Genesis 3 explains the thought process and the process Adam and Eve went through. A thought was planted in Eve’s mind/soul to doubt what God said. Who planted the thought? Genesis 3:1, the serpent. Who is the serpent? Revelation 12:9 Satan.
So that Archangel named Lucifer now called Satan, rebelled against God and lost his position in heaven, is now coming after mankind. And Satan is putting a thought in Eve’s mind/soul. Then in Genesis 3:4 Satan outright calls God a liar when he tells Eve, you will not die. So God says in Gen. 2:17 don’t eat or you will die and Satan tells Eve in Gen. 3:4 you will not die.
Now Eve has 2 thoughts, one from God and one from Satan. But notice how Satan did not stop after planting the thought? Satan invokes God’s name and then entices Eve. He lures her into doing something God did not want her to do. See our post How Satan Traps Part 1 Then Satan offers Eve a prize he could not give. He tells Eve you will be like gods. Satan couldn’t make anyone a god, it was a trick.
Remember, once you have a thought, you decide what you will do with that thought. You reason out your thoughts because your mind is your soul and the attributes of the soul are imagination, conscience, memory, reasoning and affections. And look at what Eve did.
Gen. 3:6 –
1.- She saw the tree was good for food (saw/eyes attribute of the flesh. Flesh attributes 5 senses.)
2.- And that it was pleasant to look at (saw/flesh again)
3.- A tree to be desired – (reasoning, a soul attribute).
Notice nothing mentioned about a spirit attribute?
So Satan plants a thought in Eve’s mind/soul that would entice her flesh and soul. But notice what happened.
Gen.3:7 They knew they did wrong.
They did not become gods.
We know Adam & Eve did not die physically, so what death was God talking about in Gen. 2:17? We need just to look at how God created man in Gen. 2:7, from dirt (our flesh) and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (spirit) and man became a living soul.
Clearly, Adam and Eve died a spiritual death. The attributes of our spirit are praise, prayer, reverence, hope and faith. Mankind was now separated from God. See our post Connecting Your Parts
Now thousands of years have passed. Satan still plants thoughts, entices, causes doubt and offers trick prizes. We will explore this next time.
Whose team are you on?
We covered our spirit and body in the last post. Now we will look at our soul. Our soul is our mind, our will and our emotions. Our soul/mind has thoughts, desires, imagination, conscience (knowing right from wrong), memory, reasoning and affections.
Your mind/soul is bombarded with thoughts everyday, every hour, every minute. Your thoughts are based on imaginations, memories, affections. and when you have a thought you have a conscience – knowing right from wrong – another words is this a good thought or a bad thought. Your mind/soul then reasons your thoughts – you try to reason is this good or bad, should you do this or not, how should I do that thought.
Then once you have a thought, your conscience (part of your soul/mind), determines if the thought is good or bad and you reason how to act out or not act out the thought. Let’s say the thought is a good thought –
You want to learn more about God or
You want to spend more time with your family or
You want a job promotion.
You will start to imagine how you could do that thought and then you will reason out the ways to act on that thought until you get the thought to a point where you believe in your heart – you can do it. Once you start doing your thought, you have set your affections on whatever the thought produces (more time with God, more time with family or a job promotion).
Let’s say the thought is a bad thought. The process is the same as a good thought but the outcome or result is different. Acting out a bad thought causes guilt, shame, condemnation. Guilt, shame and condemnation are all emotions of the soul.
Once you have a thought, the thought can get into your heart (the gateway to your soul/mind) and you act on the thought. Let’s look at some examples – Satan and Adam & Eve.
Here you have an Archangel named Lucifer who was in heaven, in charge of music and he had a position of authority. But then God created man and gave man dominion/authority over all the earth (see our post Understand How & Why God Made You ).
So Lucifer gets a thought in his heart and he acted on the thought. How do we know this? God tells us in Isaiah 14:12-16. Notice verses 13 & 14, “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”
Lucifer said in his heart (gateway to the soul/mind). The problem with Lucifer’s thought was he is a created being. God created him. God put him in charge of music as an Archangel with authority. We know this from Ezekiel 28:13-18. So as a created being, Lucifer’s thought to be God was foolish because Lucifer did not create anything or anyone, God did and as God is the Creator God rules.
We will look at Adam & Eve next time and their thought to rebel.
Using 2 charts, let me try to bring this into focus.
You are made up of spirit, soul and body. But God also gave you a heart and free will. When you look at your spirit you, you find that is your prayer life, your praise, worship, faith walk, reverance. So if “things” happen around you causing you to do any of these or learn about these, you are building up your spirit you.
The same goes for your body, your flesh. If you build up your body, abuse your body, or let your body run you, you are spending your life on “dirt” because the body is going to be buried and go back to dirt, (see chart).
What affects your body is your 5 senses: sight, smell, hear, touch, taste. If you have cravings, you are feeding your body what you have taught your body to like and want.
Paul talks about what the body ( the flesh ) wants in Galatians 5:19-21, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: …”
Paul explains there is a difference to feeding the flesh or feeding your spirit.
Galatians 5:16,17 “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
So how do we do that? We will cover that but right now, I need to explain the foundation so when we put it all together, you will understand and it will set you free.
The soul we will cover in our next post. If you printed the Man 3 in 1 chart, list the attributes for each part using this chart. Under your spirit man list the attributes of your spirit, the praise, faith, etc.. and under your body the flesh you, list your 5 senses.
Have a blessed day.
When God created mankind – “Genesis 2:7 KJV And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” God:
1. Formed man from dirt, from the dust of the ground.
2. God breathed (air) into man’s nostrils the breath of life. ( God gave man a spirit).
3. And man became a living soul. (God gave man a mind, will and emotions).
In Genesis 1:26-30 you have why God created man and in Gen. 2:7 you see how God created man.
When Jewish people say Christians have 3 Gods and Jews have 1 God, ask them to explain Genesis 1:26 KJV
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness….”
The point is, God is plural as shown by “us” and “our”. In 1 John 5:7 KJV
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
When you look at why God created mankind, yes I heard for fellowship and worship, some even think we were made to sit on a cloud and play harps all day praising God. Some even think God is on an ego trip. Look at the overall picture. God gets praise and worship from heavenly beings, 1 Corinthians 15:39-49. The focus of this series is not God’s ego.
When God created man, he gave man dominion over all the earth. Dominion means supreme authority, see Gen. 1:26-30. So when Adam and Eve sinned, God cursed the ground and told Adam he will go back to dirt. But what about Adam’s soul and spirit?
Using Blender 3D I asked God to help me make a word picture explaining how man is 3 in 1. This is the best I could do.
Print out this picture of man’s 3-fold nature and as we go along, God will reveal answers to you. You will see how everything you do and say affects your threefold nature. You will understand how your heart is key to everything you do and how your will determines your spiritual walk.
If you can get an understanding of this – it will revolutionize your life and you will know how to make the right decisions.
Until next time.
Ignorant/ignorance, what does it mean? According to Webster 1828 dictionary, Ignorant means destitute of knowledge, uninstructed, want or absence of knowledge. We study things to learn, to get knowledge. But there are things we are ignorant of. The same is true with God. If you want to know about God, how he thinks, how he operates, what is important to him, you have to obtain knowledge.
There are many ways to obtain knowledge about God; tv, church, other people and even God’s word. What determines our areas of ignorance? The heart. Remember, the heart is the gateway to your soul. If it is in your heart to learn about God so you are not ignorant of God, you will make the time to study & learn (Matthew 12:34).
Keeping with ignorant, Paul tells us, “2 Corinthians 2:11 KJV Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” The question is, Are you? Are you ignorant of Satan’s devices or ways he goes after you? Can you name 5 – 10 ways Satan attacks?
Romans 10:3 people are ignorant of God’s righteousness so they try to establish their own righteousness by keeping a law that was never given to them.
Romans 11:25 people are ignorant of how God is working with & through both Jews & Gentiles.
1 Corinthians 12:1 people are ignorant of spiritual gifts.
1Thessalonians 4:13 people are ignorant of the rapture of the church.
Peter says in 2 Peter 3:3 you will have people who mock God & scriptures but know this, they are willingly ignorant. They choose to not know the truth. There was a time in the past when God winked at this ignorance, but not any more.
Friend, ignorance in truth comes from a person whose heart is not on the things of God. If Satan can get your heart through sex, money, desire for things, pride, deceitfulness of riches, power, strength or other things, you will remain ignorant on the things of God and come judgment day, you are without excuse.
Ephesians 4:17 & 18 KJV “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
It is not about sitting on a cloud somewhere, it is about knowing God as well as you know your mom & dad. And it is about knowing your enemy, Satan, and how he works, how he comes after you & your family and most important, how to fight back.
We learned today, it is all about where our heart is. What is our heart’s deep down love. And if you are ignorant on spiritual matters, how are you going to correct that?
Until next time.
