Mystery 1 Solved
One question I set out to find the answer to: Are the “gifts” of the Spirit in effect today or did they cease?
As I said in the last post, The Questions , it is not my job to convince you of any denominational teaching or dogma. You need to let God the Holy Spirit teach you from God’s word and be fully persuaded in your own mind. My intent is to examine what the truth is from the Scriptures.
There are some main books in the Scriptures that teach about the Holy Spirit. As explained in Shedding This Body Part 2 of 2 the Gospel of John deals with spirit matters. In Chapter 3 is being born again, in Chapter 14 Jesus Christ promises He is going to send the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells us in John 15:26 that the Comforter/Holy Spirit will testify of Jesus – not Himself.
John 15:26 KJV
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Then John Chapter 16 is a chapter on the work of the Holy Spirit. Then in John Chapter 17 Jesus prays for not only the believers with him, but also all those who become believers. That means if you are a believer/ saved, that prayer is for you too.
John 17:20 KJV
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
And what was his prayer? Read John 17. After this, then Judas betrays Jesus and he is crucified, buried and then Jesus rises from the dead. Now remember, everything Jesus said came true. Remember Jesus said he was going to send the Holy Ghost/ Holy Spirit / Comforter.
John Chapter 20 tells us about the resurrection of Jesus and what happened after Jesus appeared to his followers. It wasn’t only his disciples he appeared to because Mary Magdalena was there too. We learn from John 20 Jesus first told Mary not to touch him because he had not yet ascended to the Father. [I believe the body Jesus had at that moment is the type of body we have when we die and those who have died in Christ. We get our “glorified” body, (one like Jesus had after he went to the Father and then came back and let everyone touch him) at the rapture when mortal puts on immortality.]
That’s also when he told Thomas to thrust his hand into his side and believe.
We see in John 20:19 it was the same day as the resurrection Jesus goes up to the Father first (verse 17) then he comes back on the same day (verse 19). Then in verse 20 we see the disciples are all together except Thomas was not there. So Jesus tells them Peace be unto you. As my Father has sent me, even so send I you.
Then Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost”. But Thomas was not there, remember? And the disciples did not receive the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit in Acts Chapter 2 but they received the Holy Spirit from Jesus on the same day as his resurrection. Mystery Solved regarding, when did the disciples receive the Holy Spirit. The day Jesus rose from the dead and it was Jesus himself who gave them the Holy Spirit.
John 20:21-23 KJV
 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
 And when he had said this, he breathed on them , and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
So later, Thomas comes back and the disciples tell him what he missed. What happened next? Read John Chapters 20 and 21.
We will pick this up next time. Jesus loves you my friend. Have you received his free gift of eternal life yet?
