The Power The Gift
Believers know, since Jesus went back to heaven, God’s presence in the world today is through the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit. If we are to understand how God the Holy Spirit works today, we need to trace events relating to the Holy Spirit. One way to do this is the book of Acts.
We know Jesus gave his disciples the Holy Ghost on the day of his resurrection (John 20:22). We see in Acts 1, Jesus tells his disciples to stay in Jerusalem until the promise of the Father to send the Holy Ghost. We know they already had the Holy Ghost however, as we see in Acts 1:8 KJV
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
When the Holy Ghost came in Acts 2:3,4 noticed they were “filled” with the Holy Ghost. Jesus had already given them the Holy Ghost, but this was a “filling” of the Holy Ghost and with this “filling” came “power”. When people started questioning what happened, Peter tells them it is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel (see Joel 2:28-32). When Peter quoted Joel 2, he left part of it out. Peter quoted only part of Joel 2:32 which says, Joel 2:32 KJV “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.”
And in the remnant whom the Lord shall call clearly includes Gentiles. Then notice Acts 2:38 KJV
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Then look at verse 41-47, Acts 2:47 KJV
“Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
There is clearly a distinction between the gift of the Holy Spirit and power. The “gift” is salvation, the power was a “filling”. Salvation is where the Holy Spirit comes into our heart, revives our spirit and our soul (our mind, will and emotions) is saved. As Paul says in Ephesians 2:18 KJV “For through him (Jesus) we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”
The “power” of the Holy Spirit is something a believer either has or does not have. All believers receive the “gift” of the Holy Spirit, but not all believers know about any “power” of the Holy Spirit because they get so hung up on their denominational dogmas. As I have said, this is a quest for truth, not dogmas. Why is this important?
If you are a “real” Christian, have you ever noticed some Christians seem to “get/understand” how to do things? It seems like they have more victories, more answered prayers. And I would seem to keep having the same issues over and over again and I just didn’t understand why. So I asked God about it and praise God, he answered me.
Part of the answer the Lord showed me is the “power” of the Holy Spirit. (Notice I did not say tongues or healing.) The other part, God the Holy Spirit opened my understanding to not only the three-fold nature of God, but also man’s three-fold nature. That’s when the light bulb went on. We will pick this up next time.
