Scripture clearly shows a shift from Old Testament to New Testament. God has impressed me to share with my readers what he has taught me to help you understand the life in the Spirit. I am not talking about tongues and healing. I am talking about our spirit walk in this world, in Christ.
In the Old Testament God dealt with everyone but his chosen people were clearly Israel, see Amos 3:1-3 “Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,
You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Israel rebelled against God many times and God the Father writes a bill of divorcement see Jeremiah 3:8 KJV
“And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.”
This opens the door for Jesus Christ as the “bridegroom” to prepare to marry the church, the bride of Christ. It is not that God has thrown Israel away, and the church has not replaced Israel as some teach. It is a shift though. God did many signs and wonders for Israel and they saw the signs and many believed because of the signs. But when Jesus, God manifest in the flesh, came and did “signs” (heal the sick, restore sight for the blind, raise the dead, etc.) some believed and many did not believe. Had the Jews received Jesus Christ as their Messiah, the Millennial reign would have started but they rejected Jesus as their Messiah. So God turns from the Jews to the Gentiles to provoke Israel to jealousy not abandon them. That is when the “shift” began. Jesus knew the Jews would reject him and that’s why Jesus was telling his disciples the Holy Ghost, the Comforter was coming in John 15 & 16.
The “shift” was from “signs” which were given to Jews/Israel (for Jews/Israel require a “sign” see 1 Corinthians 1:22 KJV “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:”) to the active working power of the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit working in and through all believers. The shift was going from “signs” in the physical earthly realm like in the Old Testament which Peter knew and lived to the New Testament church made up of believers of both Jew and Gentile.
So God calls a Jew named Saul of Tarsus who is a super religious Pharisee, Saul gets saved – he believes Jesus, and God changes his name to a Gentile name Paul and calls Paul to preach to the Gentiles to provoke the Jews to jealousy.
So now we have Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit and power of the Holy Spirit. Paul was now preaching salvation is by grace through faith and no longer works. Paul focuses on the spirit man and he teaches on our spiritual battles, spiritual life and spiritual walk.
Spirit is mentioned 504 times in scripture. Of those, 243 of them are in the Old Testament. The Old Testament has 929 chapters and spirit is mentioned 243 times in 929 chapters meaning about every fourth chapter the spirit is mentioned.
The New Testament has 260 chapters and spirit is mentioned 261 times. The 4 Gospels have 89 chapters and Acts 28 chapters and spirit is mentioned 89 times. And half of Acts is Paul’s journeys. In Paul’s letters, Paul mentions spirit 134 times out of 100 chapters.
Jude, Peter, James and John wrote 43 chapters and spirit is mentioned 38 times.
Clearly Paul’s message had a lot to do with our spirit man and the Holy Spirit. Paul teaches we are spirit beings that live in a house, a body. But one day our spirit man will separate from our body, our spirit man is going to move out of our house and into eternity. And your type of life you have in eternity is based on what you did in your house, your body.
Paul teaches us how to live in our house. He teaches the spirit life, spirit walk, spirit body and spirit living (and again, I am not talking about tongues and healing – see Journey Stop Paul.)
In our next post we will look at our spirit man. If you are a born again believer, the Holy Spirit lives inside you. Our choice in life in this world is do we live the life we want or will we let the Holy Spirit direct us into God’s will for our life. The choice is yours to make. All our battles in life are battling our flesh and the spirits of evil. Until next time my friends.
