What Is Our Spirit Man Part 1

As I mentioned last time, Paul teaches us how to live in our house, our body, as spirit beings. He teaches the spirit life, spirit walk, spirit body and spirit living (and again, I am not talking about tongues and healing – see Journey Stop Paul .) Tomorrow’s post will bring this into focus – our spirit man.

If you are a born again believer, the Holy Spirit lives inside you. The Holy Spirit has given each of us power, power in the spirit realm, if you believe it or not. Some believers believe they have the power of God working through them in the person of the Holy Spirit and some don’t believe. What determines if you have the power? Jesus said, as you believe and according to your faith. So if you believe in your heart, you believe God, then you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart.

So what is our spirit man? I asked God to help me explain this in a way people “get it”. Remember the attributes of our spirit (see the post Connecting Your Parts where we show the attributes of our spirit, soul and body).

Our spirit man battles our flesh/body and our soul, our mind will and emotions. Our spirit man desires to do God’s will and what God wants but sometimes our flesh desires lust. The flesh desires are explained by Paul in Galatians 5:19-21 – in part, adultery, fornication, witchcraft, hatred, drunkenness, murders, revellings, etc. So we can understand Paul saying we have a constant battle we fight with our flesh/our body and our mind, our soul, in Romans 7:14-25.

But it is in our spirit is where we obey, and worship God. So when Paul says we are not in the flesh but we are in the spirit,  many people say, wait a minute, I am in the flesh, in reality, to God you are not. You are in the spirit if you are saved. Paul explains this in all of Romans 8. Paul teaches us if we will build up our spirit man, not our flesh, we will have victory.

In Romans, Paul lays the foundation for why we need to be saved, how to get saved and he teaches if you are saved, you are no longer in the flesh life, but the spirit life. The question is, what do you spend more time building up, your flesh life or your spirit life? How do we build up our spirit life? Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God”. Faith is an attribute of the spirit and if you do not like spending time in God’s word, how will you build your spirit up?

When Christians spend 1-4 hours a week in church or studying God’s word and 70-80 hours in the flesh world, how can you overcome the problems in your life if you don’t learn how to deal with the problems God’s way.

Our spirit man is born again, revived once we get saved but it is our soul that is saved. Our soul is our mind, will and emotions.  The book of Ephesians explains we are in two places, our spirit is in heavenly places while our body is on earth. Our blessings are in heavenly places in Christ, Ephesians 1:3. Paul makes it very clear in Ephesians 1 that:
God chose us before the foundation of the world (verse 4).
God predestinated us to adoption by Jesus Christ, ( verse 5).
God would redeem us by the blood of Christ  (verse 7).
God Reveals the mystery of his will to us (verse 9).
That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he will gather those “in Christ” (verse 10).
That we have an inheritance  (verse 11).
And that after we get saved, God the Holy Spirit seals us proving we can not loose our salvation (verse 13).

The truth of the matter is we do not battle our flesh as much as we battle our soul, our mind, our will and our emotions. If Christians could learn to ask themselves is this a flesh matter, a mind thing (my prejudices, my experiences that have tainted my reasoning, or something I was taught ) or is it what God teaches me through the Holy Spirit before they act on a matter, they would have more success in their Christian walk. Look at Paul’s desire for the church to “get it”.

Ephesians 3:14-21 KJV
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
[15] Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
[16] That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
[17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
[18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
[19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
[20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
[21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Our choice in life in this world is do we live the life we want or will we let the Holy Spirit direct us into God’s will for our life. The choice is yours to make. All our battles in life are battling our flesh, our mind and the spirits of evil. Next time we will put this spirit man understanding into practical examples. God loves you and that is why he sent Jesus. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Until next time my friends.
