Why The 7, 8 and 9
In the Old Testament God performed signs and wonders so the Jews knew he was their God. It was settled in the Jews hearts and minds who God is. When Jesus came, he called out 12 disciples to be witnesses and a part of what Jesus was doing. Jesus explained he came to earth to die so mankind could go to heaven. Jesus explained when he left he was going to send the Comforter, the Holy Ghost.
When it was time for the Holy Ghost to come, Jesus gave his disciples the Holy Ghost the same day of his resurrection (John 20:22). Now I have a question for you. When Jesus gave his disciples the Holy Ghost, other than the Comforter, what was Jesus giving to his disciples?
Remember, throughout the Old Testament God dealt with the Jews for thousands of years. When Jesus was on earth, he was here a limited time, 33 1/2 years. Just like us, we are here a limited time. So when Jesus leaves and sends the Holy Spirit, what was Jesus giving to believers?
This is fundamental to understanding why Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit. If we don’t understand why Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, what is the difference between a believer and an unbeliever? Now we understand why Jesus came and what his purpose was. Just as God the Father worked with Israel in the Old Testament and God the Son, Jesus Christ, worked with his disciples and others, so now God the Holy Spirit works with the believers, the church.
Here is something to chew on.
Romans 12:6-8 lists 7 gifts “given unto us” Paul says.
1 Corinthians 12: 27-31 lists 8 things God set up some in the church, the body of believers.
5. Gifts of healing
8. Diversities of tongues (Notice not unknown tongues and notice only some can speak different languages, not all.)
Then notice how God manifests or makes known these things. God lists 9 ways.
1. Word of wisdom
2. Word of knowledge
4. Gifts of healing
5. Working of miracles
7. Discerning of spirits
8. Divers tongues (Different languages )
9. Interpretation of tongues (languages ).
How do these things work with believers? This is key to understanding what Jesus gave us and how we are to work with God the Holy Spirit in our world. Until next time my friends.
