1 Of 8 Vocations

There are four times Paul mentions what the Holy Spirit is doing with believers and how he does those things. Friends, God has made known his will to all believers if believers know it or not. Paul explains this in Ephesians 1:9 KJV
“Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:”

Just as God the Father worked with Israel in the Old Testament and God the Son, Jesus Christ, worked with his disciples and others, so now God the Holy Spirit works with the believers, the church.

Paul had to explain this four times.
Romans 12:6-8
1 Corinthians 12:27-31
1 Corinthians 12:7-10
Ephesians 4:11,12

When you compare all these scriptures, do you see a pattern?  Do you notice anything? Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 and Ephesians 4 are all similar.  But Romans 12 lists exhort, giving and mercy that are not mentioned in the other three areas and 1 Corinthians mentions miracles,  healing and tongues which the other two do not mention.  But look deeper.

Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 and Ephesians 4:11 all relate to things we do in “this body” in this world. These scriptures list our “vocation ” our job in the ministry. As a musician,  I might say but music isn’t there. Ahh, but it is. What is music called in churches? The music “ministry ” so music ministers and is part of the ministry vocation.

So Romans,  1 Corinthians and Ephesians refer to vocation. Clearly God the Father gives us these vocations. How do I know this? 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 KJV “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
[5] And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
[6] And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.”

God the Father gives us our vocation our operations.  God the Son, Jesus, gives us the power (administrations = power) to do these vocations. Then God the Holy Spirit gives us different gifts – donations – to manifest these vocations. If I had to put this in a simple expression,  it might go like this:

God the Father creates all these things, through Jesus Christ and puts them all into a box. Then the Holy Spirit passes them out to believers. And what is the purpose?  Ephesians 4:12
1) For the perfecting or maturing of the saints/believers.
2) For the work of the ministry.
3) For the edifying or building up of the body of Christ.

We will look at these in detail next time. You might want to write them out.

Romans 12:6-8 lists 7 gifts “given unto us” Paul says.
1. Prophecy
2. Ministry
3. Teacheth
4. Exhort
5. Give
6. Rule
7. Mercy

1 Corinthians 12: 27-31 lists 8 things God set up some  in the church, the body of believers.
1. Apostles
2. Prophets
3. Teachers
4. Miracles
5. Gifts of healing
6. Helps
7. Governments
8. Diversities of tongues (Notice not unknown tongues and notice only some can speak different languages, not all.)

Ephesians 4:11 KJV
1. Apostles
2. Prophets
3. Evangelists
4. Pastors
5. Teachers

Then notice how God manifests or makes known these things. God lists 9 ways. 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 –
1. Word of wisdom
2. Word of knowledge
3. Faith
4. Gifts of healing
5. Working of miracles
6. Prophecy
7. Discerning of spirits
8. Divers tongues (Different languages )
9. Interpretation of tongues (languages ).
