Paul the apostle said in Ephesians 6:20 KJV “For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”
And Paul, writing to the saints in 2 Corinthians 5:20 KJV “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”
What is an ambassador? Some write the word embassador and they use the root of that word to establish the word embassy. An ambassador is someone who is a minister of the highest rank employed by a sovereign, a ruler, to manage the public concerns of the sovereign. Ambassadors are not subject to the laws of nations, they are subject to the laws of their sovereign. That’s why ambassadors have diplomatic passports and although they are not subject to the laws of the nation they should be a good example and representative of their sovereign. I am going somewhere with this.
When churches are set up in America, they are and always have been tax exempt. It was only recently when laws were passed for 501c3 which would classify and bring a sovereign church under the jurisdiction of the state. This means some churches have willingly given up their sovereign, and subordinated themselves. I am not trying to go into the law and the terminology. I am trying to give as brief an explanation as possible.
When churches, for “filthy lucre’s sake” give up their sovereign authority for a tax exempt status, which they had all along, they injure the church as a whole. That is why agencies can tell pastors what to preach or not preach. Just like in elections, 501c3 churches are limited to what they can preach about candidates and politics.
When people get saved, they need to decide if they are going to follow God’s way or not. You need to know. If you follow God’s way and minster your sovereign ‘s affairs in this nation, there will be a cost. Just like the Jews. We read throughout the Old Testament how the Jews were not to do as the heathen did. They were not to eat the foods the heathen ate. They were to give God of their first fruits and their laws were different than the heathen laws. The Jews have been persecuted for 1000s of years because of their commitment to, It is better to obey God than man.
Jesus explained to Peter the principle of a sovereign in Matthew. It appears that many times Peter did things out of fear. When the storm hit and Jesus walked on water, when he denied Christ and when someone asked him about tribute, paying taxes. Jesus made it very, very clear, the children are free. Look at
Matthew 17:24-27 KJV “And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
Notice Jesus “prevented him”. Prevented here means to hinder, to obstruct, to intercept the approach. Jesus was trying to set Peter straight on the way he was thinking – “what thinketh thou Simon? Then the rest of this is –
Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
Remember, it is very clear in the Old Testament the Jews were not to charge usury, interest to their own, only to heathen.
The children are free. So are you a child of God? But notice. At the time, Jesus decided to give something, but it was not a requirement. So why did Jesus decide to give then? God doesn’t say but we know it was not yet time for Jesus to be crucified.
Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
Friends, the point is if you are going to decide you love God and Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, and follow Jesus, there is a cost. We are to lay our treasures in heaven, where our sovereign is and where our real home is, not this world. We have lots of examples of God’s people saying NO to rulers of nations and “religious ” people. From Job to Noah, Joseph, Elijah (who was fearful sometimes) to Gideon, and David, Daniel, Paul and many more.
God sends his ambassadors to the heathen nations and people. Look at Jeremiah 49:14 KJV “I have heard a rumour from the Lord , and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen”
Obadiah 1:1 KJV “The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the Lord , and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.”
Who is Edom? Edom of old is located in Iran and notice they are from Ishmael.
Proverbs 13:17 KJV “A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.”
Are you an Ambassador for Christ?
