Look Beyond

Matthew 10:28 KJV “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

What do you see in this verse? What words stand out to you? Most people see the words body, soul and hell. But look beyond those words and you will see how God’s word is layered. There is a deeper understanding of this verse that most people miss.

Not only are the words soul, body and hell in this verse but notice the words them, him and destroy? When Bible versions start altering the word of God, they generally loose the deeper meanings because they change the words. This post is not about Bible versions. It is about looking deeper.

When you look at Matthew 10:28 KJV
“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” you also see, them, him and destroy.

Them means more than one.
Him means one.
Destroy is different from the word kill. When you kill something you take its life. But destroy means demolish, pull down, annihilate. So to destroy a soul and body is greater than just killing. Why bring this up? Because when you look beyond what most people focus on in God’s word, God the Holy Spirit will give you a deeper understanding.

This verse is saying do not fear them (many people) which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. Remember,  your soul is your mind, your will and your emotions. So do not fear a multitude of people who can kill your body but not your mind, your will or your emotions.

Now notice the rest of the verse. But rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

A couple things here:
Him is singular. There is one “him” which is able to destroy both your soul and body in hell. Keep in mind, people send themselves to hell, God does not send them to hell. But because of unbelief people send themselves to hell and because people choose not to believe God, or his record the scriptures, they send themselves to hell.  On judgment day death and hell deliver up the dead in them, including Satan, and unbelievers are cast into the lake of fire with Satan, the beast and the false prophet. Revelation

Revelation 20:10-15 KJV
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are , and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
[11] And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
[12] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
[13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
[14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
[15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Did you notice what wasn’t mentioned in Matthew 10:28? The spirit. Jesus speaks of the soul and the body but not the spirit.  Why? Because the spirit is our praise, worship, faith, prayer and hope and that goes back to God.

Ecclesiastes 3:21 KJV “Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?”

Ecclesiastes 12:7 KJV “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

Right after Jesus is explaining to fear him which is able to destroy both body and soul in hell, he explains God has the hairs on your head numbered and you need to not fear man but take a stand for Jesus. Fear God not man.

Until next time.
