Is Profit Of God
As stated in our post Treasure Hunt, [ Then you have the religious people. When you follow God’s ways for life and God starts prospering you because you are doing things his way, religious people speak against you. One of the first attacks come against God’s people regarding wealth, from God’s people. .]
We see in scripture a book dedicated to prospering, 3rd John. John the apostle calls himself “the elder” and he writes to Gaius who is a believer. What is the first thing John tells Gaius?
3 John 1:2 KJV “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
There are 3 points here:
~ good health
~ soul prospering
We know John the apostle walked with Jesus, sat under the teachings of Jesus and John is the apostle “whom Jesus loved”. Now, John is writing this letter to a believer named Gaius. He mentions two types of prosperity and health.
We know Gaius was a convert of John and John’s ministry because John called Gaius one of his children. But then John says, 3 John 1:5 KJV
“Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;”
What did Gaius do? 3 John 1:6-8 KJV
“Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.”
Clearly, this had to do with Gaius’ giving. There are key words explaining this. The word charity. What is charity? Let me use scripture terminology to explain and maybe the light bulbs will come on. You have 4 types of giving in scripture:
~ The Tithe – defined as a 10th of profits.
~ Firstfruits – defined as the first profits of anything. Example: The first city God delivered into Joshua’s hands was the city of Jericho. God expected everything from that conquering to be given to him/God see Joshua 6. We will explain this more later.
~ Alms – defined as anything given to relieve the poor such as money, food, clothing, shelter. Alms is considered charity. Giving to charity.
~ Offerings / Seeds – There are all kinds of offerings or seeds. For now, offerings were given to God in thanks for his favour.
So John was writing to Gaius about his giving. Gaius was giving alms / charity. What is interesting is this verse is referenced with Luke 12:41-46 which we will come back to. Verse 6 said Gaius was giving to charity, before the church. His giving was making an impact on the church. But what happens when Gaius is helping by giving “in the church”? The church spoke against him and threw him out of the church.
How many times we hear of preachers trying to explain prospering from God’s word just for other “believers” to speak against them just like John told Gaius.
As I said in the post Treasure Hunt –
No, I am not a financial planner, but God is and he has laid out a plan in his word. My purpose is to help you understand God’s plan and then you decide what you want to do with God’s plan. If you decide to follow God’s plan, at the end of one year your wealth will increase. How do I know this? God’s word is truth.
In today’s world we hear words like income, expenses, debts, bills, interest, savings, stocks, bonds, investments and similar words. Some words from scripture are still used today. Words like lender, borrower and others.
But God does not use the word “income”. The word income is often used with the word revenue. Revenue is everything that is gained through profits, taxes, duties, rents and interest. And the word revenue is used in scripture but mainly in a negative way. Why? Students of the word of God know. God’s people did not charge interest to God’s people, only to the heathen. If interest is being charged to everyone, it is against God’s word. And revenue includes interest.
Last time, in the post Pathway To Knowledge, I asked you to make 4 columns on a piece of paper and said how to label the columns. Now, take out another piece of paper and make another four columns like you did with the other sheet of paper. This time however, we are going to write across the top of this sheet – 4 Types Of Giving & Returns – then label Column 1 – Tithe,
Column 2 write Firstfruits, Column 3 write Alms, Column 4 write Offerings / Seeds.
Proverbs 14:23 KJV “In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.”
God is involved with profit. Profit is any advantage or gain. God tells us Mark 8:36 KJV “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Friends, God will teach you to profit if you will listen and obey what he tells you. Isaiah 48:17 KJV “Thus saith the Lord , thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.”
So we will look at profit and profiting next time. But we will look at profit from God’s way, not man’s. Then we will bring our two pieces of paper together and then lay out a plan. Until next time.
