How Do You Sleep

Are you a sound sleeper or do you sleep lightly and hear every little noise?  Those who study sleep say the first four hours of sleep are most important because that is a deep sleep. I don’t know too much about types of sleep but I do know God talks about sleep.

Scripture speaks of sleeping and even when someone was dead, Jesus said he sleepeth. We learn that death of the body is also called sleeping. That is another study in it self. But I was curious about our sleeping to rest. What happens when we sleep?

It is like, even though our body lays on our bed, in our dreams we go on adventures. So are we really on the adventure but in the spirit realm? There is a lot of scripture evidence our soul is awake when we sleep. And scripture states “deep sleep” and sleep. There is a difference.

Plus, why don’t we remember our dreams when we wake up? Very few dreams we remember once our body wakes up. So I wanted to look at “deep sleep”. Not from a death perspective but from a body sleeping. My son use to tell me if he was having a bad dream he could wake himself up. Me on the other hand, when I first fell asleep, the house could have fallen down and I would not have heard it or woke up.

But what I found interesting from scripture about deep sleep was there are five people specifically named as having deep sleep fell upon them. Then there are references to sleep and dreams.

Adam ~ The Lord caused deep sleep to fall on Adam when he took one of his ribs to make Eve. See Genesis 2:21. Doctors and dentists have been using deep sleep, through anesthesia, for years to operate on people.

Abram / Abraham ~ In Genesis 15:12-17 we read a deep sleep fell on Abram and that is when God revealed to Abram the coming captivity of Israel in Egypt for 400 years. God also told Abram when Israel comes out of Egypt they would come out with great substance.

Saul ~ God caused a deep sleep to fall on Saul when David could have killed Saul but David chose not to kill Saul. See 1 Samuel 26:12.

Daniel ~ In several areas in Daniel we read a deep sleep was on Daniel and that is when God revealed coming events to Daniel. We read in Daniel 8:14-19 that while in a deep sleep Daniel heard, “Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision”. So Daniel heard God command Gabriel.

In Daniel 10:9 we read Daniel has these visions while in a deep sleep.

Eutychus ~ On a Sunday, the 1st day of the week, the disciples came to break bread and Paul starts preaching. Eutychus is sitting in a window on the third floor and falls in to a deep sleep and falls out of the window and dies. But Paul, through the power of God, raises Eutychus from the dead. See Acts 20:9-12.

Paul’s letters to the churches deal with sleep more as an issue of the body dying than sleeping in a bed. But scripture gives us clues about sleep and dreaming. Job addresses deep sleep comes in the night in Job 4:13 and Job tells us, it is when we are asleep, that is when God seals our instructions in Job 33:14-16.

Isaiah discusses ” a spirit of deep sleep” referencing God sending deep sleep to religious leaders, to rulers, to seers in Isaiah 29:10-13. Why does God send this sleep to them? In the verses we are told why. Lip service. These people have lip service to God only and their heart is far from the Lord.

So how do you sleep? One thing I have learned over the years is to always have a pad and pencil near my bed. Sometimes, I wake in the middle of the night from a dream and I write down as much as I can about the dream. Because I know God can explain things through symbols, I look up the symbols in my dreams in scripture.

Sometimes God makes things very clear and others, we have to ask the Lord, what does this mean. Then relating to those leaders and rulers who know not God, who govern against the word of God, they give God lip service. So those people are sleeping when it comes to the things of God. Don’t you.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 KJV  “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
[2] For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
[3] For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
[4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
[5] Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
[6] Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
[7] For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
[8] But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
[9] For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
[10] Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
[11] Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”

Until next time.
