Our Promises

Question: Are the Old Testament promises for the church?

Now that is a loaded and complicated question. Depends on what the promise is?

Are the promises of Deuteronomy 28 for the church? When we look at the promises of blessings and cursing in Deuteronomy, they are all based in the laws and ordinances God gave Moses.

The issue, some people think they can loose their salvation. They base that on fear and not understanding the relationship between Christ and the church. Their mind tells them, well what about the law? Good works?

If you look at Deuteronomy 28:1 it says harken unto the commandments. Observe and do them. Moses was speaking to Israel, Jews. First of all, the law was never given to Gentiles. Only to Jews. Gentiles put themselves under the law.

The law was a schoolmaster showing people they could not keep it. So when Jesus came, sin was nailed to his cross. God, once for all took care of sin. We are free if we are “in Christ”.

Friends, this troubles me. Like Paul said, 1 Corinthians 3:1-2 KJV  “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
[2] I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it , neither yet now are ye able.”

How can you understand spiritual things and walking in the spirit if you are still focusing on what your flesh does? That is what Paul was saying. He was telling them, if you are “in Christ”, grow up. It is not about your flesh and sin in the flesh. It is about your spirit man.

Galatians 5 walk in the Spirit, live in the Spirit and be led by the Spirit.   That is clearly a different message than Moses giving the law.

Let me try to give you an example in today’s world. I’ll give 2 examples:

1 ~ A sponsor. Someone says to you, I will sponsor you on your trip from Florida to Oregon. You have 30 days to make the trip. Stop anywhere, see anything, do anything and for 30 days I will pay for everything.  At the end of 30 days it is over.

The foolish person would think party time. The wise steward would plant seeds along the way and help people.

2 ~ The investor. You present an idea for a product or medicine. After your presentation an investor says I will give you everything you need to bring this to pass up to 5 years. Anything you need I will pay for up to 5 years. You must give me quarterly reports and provide samples.

In both examples, do you think there will be mishaps? Failures? Successes? Foolishness? Break-throughs? Of coarse. Salvation works the same way.

God said he sent Jesus Christ not to condemn the world, but save the world John 3:17. How? By the cross. Jesus took sin, all of it, and nailed it to his cross by shedding his blood. We don’t work for it. We didn’t earn it. And we didn’t keep a list of laws and rules to get it. It is a free gift from God, to mankind, to all who believe by faith and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Period!

That is what Paul explains in Colossians 2:11-14 KJV  “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
[12] Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
[13] And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
[14] Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”

Notice it is an operation of God? Not you?

Once you understand salvation is not based on you and what you do but it is based on Jesus Christ and what he did then, and only then can you understand

Colossians 2:15 KJV  “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

Life is not about you and what you do in your flesh but about the spiritual warfare. Your spirit man. If you still think you can loose your salvation you are stuck in the “milk” of the word and can not understand your spirit man.

Clearly, scripture tells us we get rewards or loose rewards based on what we do in our flesh but the issue of the salvation of our souls is based on the foundation of Jesus Christ. You must settle it in your heart and mind that if you really got saved, you have eternal salvation based on God’s promises.

And just like God made promises to Israel if they kept the law, God makes promises to us who are in Christ. Israel is included if they get in Christ. Jew and Gentile,  one in Christ. Identified as the bride of Christ, the church.

Friends, you can not understand walking in the spirit if you can’t get past the milk of the word, your flesh.

So what are the promises God makes to the bride, the church? Clearly God explains through Paul there is a spiritual realm and a spirit man. And our battles are not carnal / fleshly, but spiritual. Another words, in the spirit realm. We will look at those promises next time.

Until next time.
