Example of Spiritual / Carnal
Last time we said,
So now you need to answer a question. Are you truly saved? Yes or No. Have you been born again the way the scripture tells you? Yes or No. Are you a true believer and child of God? Yes or No? If you answered yes to these three questions then the Spirit of God dwells in you. The Holy Spirit is inside you. And, Romans 8:9 KJV “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
Notice the ( S ) in spirit is capitalized? That means Spirit here is a proper name. The Holy Spirit. If the ( S ) was a lower case (s ) that would mean a spirit man. And depending what the context is would determine if it was an evil spirit or man’s spirit.
In Romans 8 for the first 14 verses we notice every time the word Spirit is mentioned, the (S) is always capitalized. So Romans 8:1-14 the Spirit means the Holy Spirit. But in verse 15 we see the word spirit is lower case.
Verse 15 talks about “a spirit of bondage”. And verse 16 mentions for the first time in this chapter, our spirit. Another words, our spirit man.
Paul takes the first 14 verses explaining the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit and how, if you are saved, it is all about the Holy Spirit working in and through you. It is not about your flesh. Romans 8:5 is clear, “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”
As I was asking God how do I explain this “separation of spirit, soul and body” so people understand he reminded me of Titus. Titus was a son of Paul’s, after the faith. Paul was not married. So Paul is considered a “spiritual father” not an earthly, fleshly father. Titus 1:4 KJV
“To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.”
When we look at the earthly / flesh / body, we have earthly parents. A mother and a father. It doesn’t matter if they stayed or abandon you, they brought you into this world. They are suppose to teach you care for you and your needs and help you to grow up into a fine person. A fine person in this world. In the flesh.
Hopefully, your parents taught you about God and his word. But life isn’t that easy or simple for many, especially today when a majority of millennials have grown up without a father. Or single parent homes. But all this affects the flesh. Earthly parents are examples, teachers and providers for their earthly children.
Paul was a “spiritual” father to Timothy and Titus. Timothy we will look at later but for now, I want to look at Titus. Children are taught to honour their parents. Nothing is said about loving them, although most do love them. But honour them. Why? Because they are your parents. They taught you, fed you, provided for you, they gave of themselves to you to benefit you.
Spiritual parents do the same thing but their focus is on your spiritual life, your spirit man. As spiritual parents, they are concerned about your soul (mind, will and emotions). They teach you spiritual ways, how to live life for God, how to grow up your spirit man. When spiritual parents correct you, just like your earthly parents, it is because they love you.
Often, spiritual parents are ignored by their spiritual children. But in reality, it is what spiritual parents do that is most important. Earthly parents help your flesh and living in this world in the flesh. But spiritual parents help you go to heaven, focus on your spirit man and your soul. Remember, the things we see, the flesh, is temporal.
2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Just as in the flesh we have wayward children, so do we in the spirit have wayward children. If your child is wayward in the flesh does that mean the child is no longer your child? No. So is it in the spirit. If a spiritual child goes wayward “in the spirit” does that mean they are no longer your spiritual child? No.
Parents can’t force a child to do things. They can try by beating them or taking away privledges but the child has to decide to obey. Spiritual parents can not force their children to do spiritual things. The child ultimately has to make the decision to obey. Just as there are good and bad earthly parents there are good and bad spiritual parents.
So back to Titus. When Paul wrote to Titus he reminded Titus about how to live in this present evil world. The three short chapters in Titus emphasize unruly people, liars, fakes. Paul reminds Titus in Titus 2:7-8 KJV “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
And a final reminder to Titus was salvation is not based on works or good works. Titus 3:5-7 KJV “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
After all this we read in Paul’s letter to Timothy, 2 Timothy 4:10 KJV “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.”
Friends, we thank our earthly parents for many things, and rightfully so. But when is the last time you spent time with your spiritual parents? Did something for your spiritual parents? Took your spiritual parents out to dinner? Your spiritual parents are eternal and so are you and because of your spiritual parents sharing the gospel with you, you are saved. You owe your eternal destination to your spiritual parents showing you the way. Your earthly parents provided for your earthly needs in the flesh. Hopefully, your earthly parents are also your spiritual parents.
And as earthly parents mess up and make mistakes or the wrong decision, sometimes spiritual parents mess up too. The difference though is your spiritual parents will look to God Almighty for forgiveness and answers where earthly parents look to the world.
Trying to explain the separation of flesh and spirit man is best explained using earthly parents and spiritual parents as an example. Now it is how do we live in the spirit, walk in the spirit and be led by the Spirit. Until next time.
