Is Brain Dead – Dead

I am no doctor nor do I claim to understand medical issues. Actually, I can not stomach the sight of blood or needles. But understanding how our spirit, soul and body are connected as one opens our understanding to God and eternity.

We know the brain is an organ of the body. I like to look at it like the Command Center. The brain tells each area of the body what to do and how to interpret things. We know our soul is defined as our mind, will and emotions. So clearly, our brain has to be tied to our soul.

When people decide what they will do in life, that is determined by what they think, their brain. Whether good or evil, the brain is the Command Center. But because the brain is tied to the body, it is only part of the soul. Remember,  the soul is your mind, will and emotions. Now stick with me for a minute.

If I were to ask you what is your kidney? You would say an organ that helps expel body waste. What is your heart? An organ that pumps blood. Well your brain is the Command Center for your body.  When someone is classified as brain dead, that means their brain no longer functions in short term memory, cognitive functions, motor functions, senses or respiratory functions. So these people are put on machines “to keep them alive”. The question is, are they really alive or are doctors keeping an organ, the brain, functioning?

We know when Jesus spoke of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, it was not a parable but an actual event because Jesus said so. Luke 16:19-31 KJV
“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
[20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
[21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
[22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
[23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
[24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
[25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
[26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
[27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
[28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
[29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
[30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
[31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

We know the rich man could see, he cried, he could speak, he had feeling, he could reason, all of which tell us he has a brain. But it is not just the brain, but the brain being the Command Center, it is the mind. And the soul is made up of the mind, will and emotions. So the rich man’s soul went to hell. And Lazarus went to heaven.

But the question is, if someone is brain dead, are they dead? Death is a cessation of life according to definitions but that just shows those defining “death” are focused only on the body, the flesh. So they determine if your body dies, you die. The problem with that is people who have died and “come back” have explained experiences they have had while they were dead, according to doctors stating they “died”.

And if death is a cessation of breath and a heartbeat, machines such as ventilators can provide breath and a heartbeat. Is a person on a ventilator dead or alive? Now doctors state a person is brain dead when there is a cessation of breath and a heartbeat and neurological cessation.

If you were to look at a pregnant woman who had a massive stroke and doctors determined there was no brain function, is she dead? They could hook the woman’s body up to machines to keep her body functioning to keep the baby alive. But by definition, she would be dead, brain dead. Because you have her body functioning, her body would be warm, her chest going up and down and her baby would still be moving around inside her.

That is exactly what happened with a woman. And doctors kept her body functioning for 54 more days until they could safely remove the baby by C-section. A normal, but small, healthy baby boy was born. When the machines were turned off, her body expired.

Was the woman alive or no? God formed man from the dust of the earth ( body ) and breathed into him the breath of life and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7. Without the machines, the woman was not breathing. The breath of life left her. Her mind, will and emotions ceased meaning her soul was gone into eternity.  Doctors were keeping only her body functioning so they could deliver her baby safely.

Although the brain is the Command Center for our body it is not all of our soul. Our soul is our mind, will and emotions. Will and emotions come from the heart. When we set things in our heart they influence our mind, our Command Center.

How long do our organs function after “death”? According to the medical people, the chart below should help.  Until next time.
