How Would You Explain Quicken

Continuing from our John 1:4 assignment, we were looking at life, what is it?  We know the Gospel of John has a different focus than Matthew, Mark and Luke. John gets more into spirit or spiritual matters. So opening his gospel, John starts with the Word was with God and the Word was God. We know the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us just like John 1:14 says. But my focus is on verse 4. John 1:4 KJV ” In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

As we trace out the verses that help explain John 1:4 we see John 5:21 KJV
” For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them ; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.”

So who raises up the dead? The Father. Not only does the Father raise up the dead but the Father also quickens them. Quicken means make alive. And Jesus also quickens people.  And look at

Romans 4:17 KJV  “(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.”

Paul explained in Ephesians. Ephesians 2:1-9 KJV  “And you hath he quickened , who were dead in trespasses and sins;
[2] Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
[3] Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
[4] But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
[5] Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
[6] And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
[7] That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
[8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

But God is also going to quicken, or make alive, our mortal body as Paul explained in Romans. Romans 8:11 KJV
  “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

So when trying to understand life from what we might call a practical sense, we know God created man from the dust of the earth (body), breathed into man the breath of life (spirit) and man became a living soul Genesis 2:7. We ask is it the breath of life that is living or is it the soul that is living?

You can put a body on a ventilator which would provide air / breath. But just because someone is on a ventilator does not mean they are alive. You can pump air into anything just about. The body is nothing more than dust of the ground, dirt. Air is the breath of life. You can pump air into anything. So life has to do with the soul. And God explains this to us in many areas but I want to look at one, Elijah.

There is a drought in 1 Kings 17 and Elijah stays at a widow woman’s house with her son during the drought. During the time Elijah stays there, her son gets sick and dies. Here is the account.

1 Kings 17:18-23 KJV  “And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?
[19] And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
[20] And he cried unto the Lord , and said, O Lord my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?
[21] And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord , and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
[22] And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
[23] And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.”

Notice how the child was determined to be a live? The soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. So life is determined by the soul. The soul is our mind, will and emotions. So in John 1:4, it says about the Word, Jesus,
John 1:4 KJV  “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
The soul is affected by the life and this life is in him, in Jesus. But there are people “alive” today who are not “in him” you say. Yes, but technically, they are considered dead. Dead to God until they get quickened just like Paul explained in Romans 4:17 KJV  “(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.”

Remember Ephesians 2:1-3 KJV
  “And you hath he quickened , who were dead in trespasses and sins;
[2] Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
[3] Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”

It is like a bunch of dead people walking around. It is not until they are quickened John 5:21 KJV  “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them ; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.”

Have you considered the Godhead paticipates in quickening?   Until next time.

I am looking at “was life ” and ” the life was the light if men ” – what does that mean? And that is the assignment.
