Balancing Spiritual & Carnal Part 5

Last time we said –

But being baptized “with” not in the Holy Ghost is what Jesus was telling them.
Acts 1:5 KJV  “For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.” And then Jesus explained what being baptized with the Holy Ghost meant.

Acts 1:8 KJV  “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Another words, when you get saved you receive the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit quickens , makes alive, your spirit man towards God. And being baptized with the Holy Ghost is after you are saved you will be immersed with the Holy Ghost and you will receive power. What do we use this power for? Verse 8 told us, we shall be witnesses unto Jesus.

When it comes to things believers don’t understand in God’s word, many times they will look to their denomination. Even people in general look to what their denominational church or synagogue teaches. But where should they look? God, and read and study God’s word. Then what do you do with information from God, from his word, that does not line up with what you believe or what you were taught or what your denomination teaches? You have to make a decision.

It seems like God gives every generation more revelation of his word. Prior to 1948 people could not imagine Israel being re-established in their own land as scripture teaches. Yet today, we look back and have a more clear understanding / revelation. As Jesus said when the Holy Spirit came he  opens our understanding of God’s word. He is our teacher. As our teacher, he gives us revelation. This didn’t happen before the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the people had to go to the prophets for answers.

What if the Baptists and fundamental Baptists are living and teaching revelation to the resurrection and coming of the Holy Spirit and then stop? Baptists teach John’s baptism, repentance unto salvation and then they live by the law by setting up their rules and regulations known as legalism. It is not a relationship with God but keeping rules to have a relationship with God. And when it comes to the Holy Spirit, they do not teach about how God works through the Holy Spirit other than convicting people to get saved. Then you are on your own to learn about the Holy Spirit but be sure it lines up with their denominational teachings. I am not knocking them, I was part of all that for years and raised my son in that church. But I never labeled myself or my son a Baptist. We are Christians.

And then we have the Pentacostals who believe and teach the Holy Spirit gives gifts and power and they have elevated the gifts and power over preaching salvation and winning souls. As Paul said, they have made the gifts into idols. And they do not discern the gifts nor acknowledge certain gifts cease. 1 Corinthians 12:1-2 KJV  “Now concerning spiritual gifts , brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
[2] Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.”

Notice Paul says these believers were “led” into making the spiritual gifts idols? And if you walk into most Pentacostal churches today, you hear a lot about tongues and healing and very little on how to get saved. Oh you will hear you need to be saved and then receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But to actually sit down and explain salvation through the blood on the cross like Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch ( Acts 8:25-40 ), does not happen often. Maybe because the pastor knows everyone there is saved or the helpers he expects to speak with visitors, I don’t know.

There was a time when I would have “argued” with believers over doctrine. But not any more. God has shown me that I am not accountable for what others do and believe. My job is to share the truth of salvation by grace through faith. To win souls. To let God the Holy Spirit work through me to magnify Jesus and what he did for the world. One thing I have said over and over, he that winneth souls is wise. That is why people love Billy Graham . He did not engage over a bunch of issues. His messages were all about getting saved.

And today I say what Paul said,

Philippians 1:15-18 KJV  “Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
[16] The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
[17] But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
[18] What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.”

God is spirit and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth scripture says. Our body is nothing more than a vessel for our spirit man to function. As a believer, the Holy Spirit lives inside all true believers. So the Holy Spirit, working with our spirit man, do God’s will. We have a choice to ignore the Holy Spirit or allow God to work through us.

God has given all believers spiritual gifts if you believe it or not. We are to use these spiritual gifts to increase the kingdom of God. I am not talking about our gifts and talents in our flesh, our body. I am talking about our spirit man. You can read about these gifts in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12.

Notice Romans 12 starts with our body, our flesh and 1 Corinthians starts with spiritual gifts. And we will pick it up from here next time.

Until next time.
