Good vs Evil – A Treat
When people tell us about prayer they sometimes complicate prayer. I am speaking in the context of this series Good vs Evil. You see, believers are in spiritual warfare every day. We read and study about our warfare, our armour and our weapons. But if we were understanding the scope and power God has given us, through prayer and his word, we truly could change the world.
Paul tells us of seven things we need to use in our spiritual warfare. Can you name all seven and how you are to use these seven? If not, how is your battle going? You can read about your weapons in Ephesians 6 but my focus is on the last weapon particularly.
Ephesians 6:11-18 KJV “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places .
 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
Prayer – even Jesus’ disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray in Luke 11. Notice Jesus taught them the following :
Where do you direct your prayer?
Our Heavenly Father. Not Buddha, not Mohammed, not Mary, or anyone other than Our Heavenly Father.
How do you start your prayer?
Acknowledge God the Father as holy and acknowledge his kingdom, not the world’s kingdoms.
Then make your petition.
First in making your petition is acknowledging God’s will, then petition for provisions ( food ), then forgiveness, direction and delieverance.
This is the exact “formula” if you will, when someone gets saved. The “Sinner’s Prayer” is a prayer people pray and mean in their heart, towards God the Father. They acknowledge Jesus’ blood atonement on the cross to pay for their sin acknowledging God is holy and they are a sinner. Then they acknowledge God’s will for them to be saved and they ask for forgiveness, provisions (salvation of their soul) and then they ask for deliverance and direction. They conclude in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ because Jesus told his disciples to ask of the Father in his name.
John 14:13-14 KJV “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”
People say, but I asked God for (fill in the blank ) and God did not give it to me, why? I believe there are two reasons.
Doctrine wise, we are the church, the bride. There is a spiritual application in
James 4:3 KJV “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
But also because many believers do not understand effectual prayer. James 5:16 KJV Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Effectual prayer is prayer that causes effects. So moving in doctrinal teaching, how does the bride of Christ pray effectually? We know Jesus said to pray in his name. But we also know the word of God and, not only has God the Father exalted the name of Jesus above all names but God’s word works bringing changes.
Philippians 2:9-11 KJV “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”
So when Paul instructs the church, believers, how to fight spiritual warfare and tells them what armour to use, he concludes our fighting by telling us to pray. Use prayer . Ephesians 6:18 KJV
” Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
Just as you use prayer to get saved, you use prayer in life. When you got saved you saw in God’s word you needed to be saved. So you chose to believe God and his word and you prayed for Jesus Christ to come into your heart and save you. You chose to believe on Jesus, the Word made flesh as the Gospel of John tells us.
Fighting in spiritual warfare and while here in this world, we operate the same way, through prayer. And to have effectual prayer, you have to use God’s word. Let me explain. I had prayed for 22 years for someone to get saved. I tried to be a good testimony for the Lord, witness all the time, be helpful but the guy just would not get saved. I pestered the Lord about saving this guy. Finally, after 22 years he got saved a month before he died. Sure I rejoiced in his salvation but man, why did it take so long?
And then there is this other person who got saved as a youngster and in their later teenage years decided to walk away from God. Naturally, I prayed for them too. Then the Lord showed me about effectual prayer. So I took promises from God’s word and read God’s word back to him in my prayers. I reminded the Lord I believe you and your word. And even though I may not see evidence of this right now, I do believe you and your word so I am praying your word over this person. Then I put the person on prayer lists I knew who would pray God’s word. It did not take 22 years. It took 2 years.
Maybe we will do a couple posts on prayer but friends, God has opened the windows of heaven to all of us through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. And Paul tells us in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in Colossians 3:17 KJV ” And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
And when we give thanks to God the Father, Ephesians 5:20 KJV “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”
There is a reason why God’s word says, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and not in just Jesus’s name. We will look at the reason later. The name of Jesus is a precious name and I titled this post Good vs Evil – A Treat because there is a woman, who has since gone home to be with the Lord, who sang a beautiful song about the name of Jesus. I have posted the video below the picture and hope you listen to the words of the song.
Until next time.
The name of Jesus – what a lovely name.
